Caring for a sapling in its first year
Simple steps that help a sapling survive the summer: watering, mulch around the trunk, protection, and when to ask for help.
The first year is the hardest in a tree's life. These simple steps help it.
- Water deeply, not often: a generous watering that reaches the roots is better than a little every day. In summer water early in the morning or after sunset.
- Mulch around the trunk: a layer of straw or dry leaves keeps the moisture in and the soil cool. Keep it a little away from the trunk itself.
- Protect the sapling: a simple fence or stake protects it from animals, wind and trampling.
- Do not prune much: leave its leaves in the first year; they are its food.
- Watch for signs: yellow or wilting leaves despite watering can mean a problem with the soil or the roots.
If it is one of the foundation's trees and you notice damage, report the problem from the app with a photo.
